Access Rights Management
Access Rights Management (ARM) was designed to create one easy to use, access management system
that efficiently facilitates requests, approvals, provisioning, certifications, and governance related to
University of Illinois systems.
The purpose of the Building the ARM application is to build, integrate, and deploy an AITS Security
Application to replace the existing, homegrown products that have reached limits of effectiveness and
adoption at the university.
Goal
The primary goal of replacing our current security applications is to make them easier to use and to
streamline the process of requesting access to enterprise applications.
Unit Security Contacts (USCs) play a key role in managing and maintaining access to administrative tools
within their departments. However, the current tools are difficult to use, making it hard for USCs to
determine the right access levels and submit accurate requests. This often leads to confusion, delays, and
frustration for USCs, hiring managers, and security teams.
There are multiple access request systems in place today, which are complex and time-consuming. Many
administrative tasks require manual work and lack automation and user-friendly features. These challenges
highlight the need for a more efficient, centralized, and intuitive solution.
Benefits
Streamlined Access Request Process
Provide USCs with a guided, structured selection of profiles and consolidated user
information—including job roles and manager input—in a single, trackable interface to reduce
back-and-forth communication.
Integrated and Automated Workflows
Manage access prerequisites such as training and approvals (including multi-campus and
multi-level workflows), and integrate with source systems to support automated provisioning and
de-provisioning of access.
Security and Governance
Ensure compliance with Segregation of Duties (SOD) requirements, implement a formal governance
structure for best practices and application changes, and architect the system to be scalable
for departmental needs.
Operational Efficiency and Support
Combine DS and AITS security applications into a unified tool, streamline the USC audit process,
and provide formal USC training developed with the Instructional Design Team.
Time and Productivity Gains
Reduce time spent by USCs, managers, and security personnel on access requests and audits, while
enabling faster access for end users.
