Interim Executive Vice President/Vice President for Academic Affairs Biography

EVPAA, Dr. Avijit Ghosh Dr. Avijit Ghosh was appointed as the Interim Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of Illinois System effective July 15, 2021. Dr. Ghosh serves as the second most senior executive and the chief academic officer, reporting to the president, for the $7.0 billion U of I System. He works closely with the chancellors and provosts of the Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield universities in defining and shaping academic priorities and directions for the system, providing advice on important academic policy and budgetary issues, and spearheading system-wide academic initiatives. In addition, he works closely with the president to advocate for the U of I System across the state and the nation by building connections with legislators, funding agencies, and leaders in higher education and industry.

Prior to Dr. Ghosh’s appointment, he has a long history of serving the U of I System. He served as the Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Comptroller of the University of Illinois System beginning July 23, 2018 after filling the role in an interim capacity since September 1, 2017.

Previously, from August 2014 to 2017 he served as the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Illinois Hospital and Clinics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. During his time as the CEO, UI Health’s presence in the community was expanded, specifically with the opening of the Pilsen Clinic and the hospital successfully completed Joint Commission Accreditation, garnering a highly positive evaluation. Under his leadership, the focus to serve more patients continued, outpatient visits increased, and revenue growth improved to a more stable position both financially and operationally. 

From 2011 to 2014 he served as the Senior Advisor to the President of University of Illinois with responsibility for leading mission critical, university-wide strategic initiatives.  From 2008 to 2011 he served as the Vice President of Technology and Economic Development with responsibility for spearheading the University’s economic developments efforts and overseeing the management of the University’s intellectual property assets including the University’s technology transfer offices, early-stage investment funds, incubators and research parks that support and nurture the commercialization of university technologies.

From 2001 to 2008 he served as the Dean of the College of Business at the Urbana-Champaign campus.  In this role he spearheaded many programmatic advancements and improvements in student quality and diversity and the Investment in Excellence fundraising campaign that resulted in the doubling of the college’s endowment with new professorships, scholarships, and program support as well as the construction of the new 162,000 square feet “Leed Platinum” certified Business Instructional Facility.

Before joining the University of Illinois, Professor Ghosh served at the New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business as professor of marketing and as the Deputy Dean.  He received his Bachelor of Science from Calcutta University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management from Xavier Institute and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Iowa.

Professor Ghosh's research interests are in the areas of marketing strategy, entrepreneurship, retailing and locational analysis.  He is the author of several books on retailing and location analysis and his research has appeared in leading academic journals in marketing and geography.  He was the editor of the Journal of Retailing from 1985 to 1991 and has served on the editorial boards of a number of professional journals.

He served on the Board of Governors of the Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Laboratory and also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce.
