Policy for Awarding of Emeritus/Emerita Status

Emeritus/emerita status may be awarded upon
retirement from the University of Illinois to faculty and to senior
administrators as recognition of honorable service to the University
according to the guidelines below. Criteria, processes, rights and
privileges appertaining to emeritus/emerita status will be determined
at the campus level.
Faculty
    - Faculty[1] who are awarded emeritus/emerita status
    will retain their rank at the time of retirement followed by the
    designation "Emeritus/Emerita." 
 
    - Recommendations for emeritus/emerita designation
    must be made by the employing department with the approval of the
    appropriate college dean, the chancellor and the president. 
 
Administrators
    - Presidents, chancellors, and deans may retain at
    the time of retirement their last administrative title, followed by
    "Emeritus/Emerita." 
 
    - Recommendations for emeritus/emerita designations
    must be made by the provost or president[2], with approval at all
    succeeding levels, as stated above in the section on Faculty. 
 
Emeritus/emerita status prior to retirement
    - Emeritus/emerita status may be granted prior to
    retirement for those who have served the University for at least five
    years as dean, provost, chancellor, or president and who resign such positions
    to return to the faculty. Such designations must be recommended by the
    provost or president[2], with approval at all succeeding levels.
 
[1]As defined in this document, faculty includes a)
those in the professorial ranks, i.e., professors and associate
professors; b) research, clinical, and teaching faculty; and c) teaching
associates of University High School. 
[2] The president of the University is an exception.
Approval for a president's emeritus/emerita status is granted by the
Board of Trustees.
