Vice President for Academic Affairs Biography

VPAA, Prof. Christophe Pierre

Dr. Christophe Pierre was appointed as the University of Illinois Vice President for Academic Affairs on October 16, 2011. He came to the University from McGill University in Montreal, where he has served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada from 2005-2011. He was also a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and held the Canada Research Chair in Structural Dynamics and Vibration.

As Dean, Christophe Pierre presided over a period of exceptional growth at McGill Engineering and led fundraising efforts that raised more than $50 million for the Faculty of Engineering.

A graduate of the École Centrale de Paris, France, in 1982, he received his Master of Science degree from Princeton University in 1984 and his Ph.D. from Duke University in 1985. Pierre has held various administrative and faculty positions at the University of Michigan, including Chair of the College of Engineering Curriculum Committee, Graduate Program Chair, and Associate Chairman in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Initiatives at the University's Rackham School of Graduate Studies from 1999 to 2005, and in 2002 he was named Stephen P. Timoshenko Collegiate Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Pierre is a leader in the fields of vibrations, structural dynamics and nonlinear dynamics, where he is perhaps best recognized for pioneering research work on mode localization in disordered periodic structures. His vibratory response prediction codes have been licensed to all major jet engine manufacturers worldwide, the U.S. Air Force and NASA. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 reference publications.

In 2005, he received the N.O. Myklestad Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in recognition of his major innovative contribution to vibration localization. He has served as an Associate Editor for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Journal and the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics. He is currently Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics, a member of the Advisory Board of Nonlinear Dynamics and the Editorial Boards of ASME Applied Mechanics Reviews and the International Journal of Reliability and Safety. Dr. Pierre is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics.
