The effects of the national economic downturn continue to be felt in Illinois, according to the University of Illinois Flash Index, which dropped to 100.6 in October, its lowest reading in more than four years. The Flash Index, the first monthly barometer of economic activity in Illinois, was down from 101.1 in September, indicating Illinois is indeed being affected by the significant slowing in the national economy. The index has declined steadily since reaching its post-2001 recession peak of 107.4 in April 2007. Read more details.

"The Lincoln-Douglas Debates: The Lincoln Studies Center Edition," edited by Rodney O. Davis and Douglas L. Wilson, is featured in the October 23, 2008, issue of The New York Review of Books.
"Though based on the same basic transcripts that Lincoln and most subsequent scholars have used, Davis and Wilson have corrected the irregular paragraphing, arbitrary punctuation, and occasionally garbled transcriptions in the originals. The result is a definitive new edition that is far more readable and almost certainly more reliable."

The September 15, 2008, issue of Publishers Weekly featured a laudatory
review of "Spring," the new University of Illinois Press poetry book by Oni
Buchanan.
"In this adventurous mix of taut lyrics, dramatic monologues and
free-ranging typographical experiments, Buchanan, who is also a pianist, has
an ear for mellifluous runs and beautifully, at times humorously, evoked
emotions."

The University of Illinois’ Institute of Government and Public Affairs (IGPA) conducts and disseminates research on public policy issues affecting state and local government; provides state-of-the-art executive leadership and development programs to enhance public leadership; and facilitates the application of empirical research to the critical issues and problems facing Illinois and other states across the nation. These activities are carried out in response to issues and concerns raised by state and local officials, Illinois citizens, as well as IGPA’s own experts. The IGPA recently released “The Illinois Report 2008,” a nonpartisan, evidence-based assessment of ten crucial issues that confront the state of Illinois. These critical issues include the economy, energy outlook, education and poverty. Some critical areas included in the 2008 report are the state’s economy, energy outlook, health care, education
and poverty.
